| Two months after Paul's Midnight Ride, British ships opened fire and Charlestown was set ablaze. American troops dug in at Breed's Hill and Bunker Hill to fight the oncoming British soldiers. The Americans ran out of ammunition and retreated, but they shocked the British who lost more than 1,100 men during the battle. 144 American colonists died that day, including Paul's friend, Dr. Joseph Warren, who had started Paul off on his Midnight Ride. |
