Now we can see Long Wharf (to the east) and Clark's Wharf (the smaller pier to the north). Notice how Boston is connected by a small "neck" to the south. In severe storms, the neck would flood, and Boston would become an island. Today much of the water area has been filled in and built on.

Mill Cove is the light blue area. It was often used as a dumping area for waste from the surrounding shops and mills. Benjamin Franklin used to dump the waste from his father's candlemaker's shop here. In those days candles were made from animal fat, so the "waste" was probably pretty gross!
